Exploration of sports cultural heritage, creation and distribution of new ideas and knowledge of Sport in Latvia, from the beginnings of organized sport to the multiplicity of nowadays modern sport – with an aim to educate the society, especially youth, to strengthen the national self-esteem and identity, to inspire an individual and create a desire to participate in sports activities, promoting formation of a healthy, creative, free and responsible society.

The idea of creating Sports Museum arose in 1930’s when Kārlis Vītoliņš (1872-1953), a famous circus artist and a jeweller gave his sports trophies and his collection of bicycles as a gift to Voldemārs Šmidbergs (1893-1975).

The building of Latvian Sports Museum is a part of the common building of 5, 7, 8, 11 and 14 Alksnāja Street and 9 Vecpilsētas Street – a complex of dwelling houses and warehouses of 16th-19th century. As of the foundation of the Sports Museum in 1st of January 1990 premises in Old Riga, Alksnāja Street 7/9 have been obtained. The buildings haven’t kept their original construction as they have experienced fires and reconstructions to change the purpose of the buildings.
